Fun, "Seducing" Romp With a Twist of Austen

I braced myself to not like this novel, but had read previous reviews and was pretty curious. From the very beginning, the novel had a very irreverent approach to Austen, but in some ways, not as directly as I thought. The novel is really more about Flip (Phillipa), who has a little (okay, not so little...) fantasy encounter with Mr. Darcy during a massage appointment. She later finds that it wasn't just a dream, and that it is having dramatic affects on the entire beloved tale, Pride and Prejudice. The story doesn't try to change the original, in fact, Flip's not interested in bagging Mr. Darcy (thank goodness), or even changing the story (thank goodness again); in reality, Flip has to fix what her fantasy started, and finds a handsome scholar to help her do so. I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling and writing in Cready's novel, and have to give it to her for daring to even touch such an iconic story. Cready's approach is bawdy, and pretty licentious in places, but was a fun romp through Austen, and a good romance overall. I laughed out loud, and often...what more can I say?

Really Fun Story of Mr. Darcy and Flp

Great story of Mr. Darcy and Lizzy, along with Philippa and Magnus. Great fun - very believeable characters. I really enjoyed reading the fast-paced story and interesting plot twists, plus lots of Pride and Prejudice connections. Thanks, Gwen, for the excellent read!

Happily Surprised

I had two main reasons for picking this novel up, 1. Every woman loves Mr Darcy 2. The prospect of getting a scene involving Mr Darcy that was a little more, shall we say vivid(?) than Austen's version was not to be missed!! Cready did not disappoint. "Seducing Mr Darcy" was a cute little novel. It has a satisfying ending with enough laugh out loud scenes to make up for any offence caused by the serious distortion of "Pride and Prejudice." It felt a little rushed towards the end, but all of the characters (even the one's you weren't supposed to like) were likeable and I was happily surprised with the clever plot twists. The male characters positively smolder and the spirit of Austen's gorgeous, dark and brooding men was definitely upheld (and infused with just the right amount of naughty/bad boy as well!!) I have to admit that by the end of the novel I was far more in love with Magnus Knightly than I was with Darcy! Highly recommend as a bit of lazy Sunday fluff that you will happily re-read.

Gwyn Cready has done it again!

Gwyn Cready has another hit on her hands. I loved "Tumbling Through Time" but now I have to say I am a huge fan with "Seducing Mr. Darcy." Gwyn's style is funny, contemporary and not to be missed. A great "anytime" read. Jane Austen would be proud and not prejudiced!

A fantastical leap of faith-- but just go with it -and enjoy!

The cover is definitely a bodice ripper of the highest caliber and so is the story. That said, it is deliciously angsty and Darcy is all you desire him to be. The book is about a divorced woman,Philippa (Flip,) who hasn't had any action since her husband left her over two years prior, and (okay here is where you must take a fantastical leap of faith -- just go with it!) gets this therapeutic massage that sopposedly transports your imagination into your favorite book. Yet, instead of transporting Flip into her current racy bodice ripping romance novel, she finds herself in Regency England in the company of Mr. Darcy pre-Pride & Prejudice. After waking from her massage (and an explicit encounter with Mr. Darcy in a Grecian folly) she finds later in spotting a 1st edition P & P on display at her university library, that certain important passages are changed -- like the proposal turned argument at Hunsford with Elizabeth and Darcy is about her, Philippa! So she must discover a way to correct the chain of events she has unwittingly altered. I am terribly loyal to Darcy and Elizabeth, together... but I liked this character, Philippa, so much, I sheepishly must admit, I kind of liked Darcy with her... very much... Surely, this isn't some great literary work of Jane Austen (just look at the cover) but I believe you will enjoy it. If the cover embarrasses you too much to read in company, well fold it back and tell those that have their sensibilites easily affected to kindly, "Avert your eyes." Ha! It's remarkably well-written -- and it showed Darcy prior to meeting Elizabeth in Hertfordshire and how he might have behaved amongst his peers. He is just a man afterall. A smokin' hot man! And in not wanting to give too much of the story away, the Darcy-like man & Austen expert, Magnus, who helps Philippa right this wrong, well, I think he is a keeper, too; he "almost" eclipses Mr. Darcy.
