I picked this one up after hearing the author speak at a writer's conferece and was very glad I did. Ms. Smith takes a period that isn't usually done in historicals and weaves a compelling story that has a fair measure of humor as well as passion and drama. If you're looking for a historical that's slightly different, I definitely recommend it.
A fantastic page turner

I devoured this one in one sitting. the hero is bold and exuberant, the heroine has had a tough time, and the English Civil War is raging all around them. Theymust not only struggle for each other' s love, but their very survival. A book with dark moments and issues, but isn't that what real life is?

This was a great book. The characters and the story flowed to the point I found myself staying up late. Bravo Haywood Smith!

Even for those who don't usually read romance, this one's worth a look. Ms. Smith captivates her reader with a great story and vivid characterizations, artfully dealing with some important, timeless issues along the way. She drops a really fine romance storyline into an obviously well-researched historical setting. A worthy follow-up to "Shadows In Velvet"! Read this one
