An Eye Opener

This was an awesome, well written book about the effects of abuse. I could not put the book down once I started reading it! As a teacher of children with special needs, I often run across children who have physical evidence of abuse. We must look beyond the physical aspects and observe changes in behavior, etc. I am recommending this book to my fellow teachers. Thanks for exposing the truth about abuse and sharing such a delicate story.

Captivating and Powerful

This is a book that you will not be able to put down. Although the story is a horrific account of a traumatic childhood, it is a powerful demonstration of the strength of the human spirit. This book is a must read for anyone that works in the field of social services. It tells how abuse affects the entire family. Thank you Ann for breaking through the chains and bringing this powerful story to light. The best seller novel "Glass Houses" doesn't hold a candle to this book!

A Painfully Important Book

Writing from her own experience, Ann Schofield gives the reader direct access into a world we might rather not enter. Beautifully, almost poetically written, this is in truth a frank, unfiltered, and unflinching tale of abuse from the perspective of the children who lived it. It is also a tale of the aftermath of abuse, the "secret scars" carried into adulthood, and ultimately it is a tale which honors those who survived and those who didn't. Individuals tending to their own scars from domestic violence need to approach this book with caution. Others will be challenged by the pain so honestly shared, but the depth of understanding gained makes it a painfully important book to read.
