Season of the Strangler is a less than satisfying effort by a great author. We're shown a number of well-drawn characters and their human frailty in the face of fear, but the book does not force the reader to confront weighty questions of good and evil like Passage Through Gehenna, nor does it reach a satisfying conclusion in terms of plot. For fans of Madison Jones, it's a worthwhile addition to the library, but it is not on a par with his masterpiece, A Cry of Absence.
