In June of 1960 Bill Angus, age nineteen, left Michigan for California by bicycle. Bill was not a cyclist. Before leaving on this continent-crossing journey, his longest bicycle ride had been twelve miles. He was a junior college student without a plan-tired of going to class and going to work. He wanted to find a direction and purpose to his life. He left on his journey of discovery with seventy dollars in his pocket and no idea of what this grueling cross-country adventure would entail. Nor did he foresee the generosity of strangers who, almost every day, offered him help and encouragement. Like many others on journeys of discovery, he did not find what he expected, nor did he recognize what he found.
