An excellent book with which to start your studies.

All the major sea battles of the 20th Century are here and, with great skill, this author has assembled all the relevant players and all the relevant ships just as all the chess pieces would be in place immediately before a chess tournament. In short, the greatest naval vessels of all time are described here in their historical context. Curiously a couple of the chapters are out of strict date order as we work our way through the century from the Battle of Tsushima in 1905 to Leyte Gulf in 1944. In between we have the Goeben incident, Heligoland Bight, the Emden and Coronel & the Falklands - all of which took place in 1914, Dogger Bank 1915, Jutland 1916, River Plate 1939, Coral Sea 1942, Cape Matapan 1941, Midway 1942, the loss of HMS' Prince of Wales and Repulse 1941, Guadalcanal 1942 and the Philippine Sea 1944. Told in a manner which makes the book hard to put down, this would be an excellent choice for those who are new to the subject of 20th Century warfare at sea. The entire book hangs together extremely well as we move forward through the century during which time we witness both the birth and later the demise of some of the greatest fighting machines ever devised by man. All the supporting historic photographs, maps and charts are there - including much that is not used elsewhere. With the occasional work of art thrown in for good measure, this is as good an overview of the subject as you will find. NM
