I picked this up from a local bookseller, but then life happened and it ended up on a bookshelf. I just rediscovered it this weekend, and decided to flip through it to rediscover my distant Scottish heritage. What a suprise - I thought I had in my possession a standard coffee table book with nice glossy pictures and drab text detailing all sorts of statistics about population, acreage, and elevation. Instead, while the pictures are quite nice, the text is the main attraction here. Giles gets on a roll (helped by a dram or two of whisky?) and colors each page with wit and a heavy dose of political opinion. What was supposed to be a 15 minute diversion turned into a lengthy read from cover to cover. Believe it or not, this coffee table book is a great read! An internet search reveals that this author was well regarded in the Scottish literary crowd for his wit and humor. Unfortunately, it appears he has passed away. Giles - post-humously - thanks for a great lesson in the merits of not taking oneself too seriously.
