Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, is credited with starting the English tradition of taking Afternoon Tea. At the time, circa 1830, supper was not served until 8 or 9 o'clock at night. So late one afternoon the Duchess wanted something to eat and requested tea and light refreshments to be served in her room.
