Vol.4 -- Love and War!

In this latest volume of "School Rumble," chapters 47 through 54 are primarily dedicated to the complete misunderstanding love-triangle created by Tenma between Mikoto, Eri-chan, and Harima-kun (after introducing the new female character Ichijou). The results of which have Mikoto and Eri end up at odds with each other while Harima and Hanai fight over it. The second story has the group of school chums head for a hiking trip, where there are more humorous misunderstanding. This is followed by stories of Yakumo and Sarah playing basketball with a giraffe, Akira's part time job, Yakumo and Harima's first meeting, and Harima's animal friends. The great thing about "School Rumble" is the unexpected things that happen. It is those unexpected moments which are just so funny. I wish I could explain more, but that would spoil things. Suffice to say if you found the first three volumes funny, you aren't going to be disappointed with volume 4. There are some non-humor moments too. After all, one of the major themes of "School Rumble" is unrequited love. As such, we see at least one character have to come to terms with her unrequited love, and it is a tad sad. Del Rey does its usual good job. There are good translator notes at the end of the volume and a preview of volume 5 (in Japanese). My only complaint (and it is a tiny one) is that I think the adaptation should use the name "Hige" (beard) when Eri-chan refers to Harima-kun since that is her name for him. I just think it would be a better choice because I find the word "hige" sounds funnier than "beard." Bottom line: more "School Rumble" goodness for those who've enjoyed the first three volumes.
