Great Book!

This is almost a reference book. It is very good reading, informative and has a great perspective on today's and yesterday's education. I have used mine for three semesters and will use it for years to come. I'll never re-sell this one!

Very Indepth Look of Societal Factors Affecting Education

This book was a required text for one of my Administration Credential courses. The text is timely as Tozer and others tie current perspectives regarding race, gender, social class, and politics to those of the past. Each chapter highlights at least one key figure that helped shape the educational landscape (e.g., Thomas Jefferson, Booker T. Washington, Robert Conant, etc.)In addition each chapter deals with the social climate (social theory/philosophy), the politics, and the economy of the time and their effects on American Education. The text reads quickly and has a progressive slant. Yet it was very informative- almost to a fault. At times I felt I was reading a history text rather than an educational one. Overall, I would recommend this book to those interested in the forces that shaped the educational institution through history.

Putting School into Perspective

School and Society: Historical and contemporary Perspectives by Violas, et al. is a very informative text that describes the relationship between American history and the development of the school system. The authors' research, opinions, and resources truly gives the reader a good understanding of society's role in the educational system as well as ideas to improve oneself as an educator and citizen of the United States. Topics ranging from historical curriculum to teaching as a profession help captivate the reader's interest due to the authors' fluidity in writing and abilities to show connections to present-day issues. This text should be required reading for all.T. Ramos EDU 501 School & Society

An interesting textbook

I found this text to be very interesting. Which is very suprising. Most textbooks are very boring but I actually liked most of the chapters and agreed with their viewpoint.

Excellent coverage of the history of American Education.

This book does an excellent job of covering the history of education in America. It covers the controversial issues and the people involved in a fair manner without taking sides.
