Discusses the scent language used by animals throughout the world for communication and behavior control. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I've had this neat little book since I bought it at the Field Museum in Chicago in 1984. It discusses all kinds of scent communication among different kinds of animals, from sharks' detection of the smell of blood in water, to insect pheromones, to the smelling capabilities of birds and mammals. This book is written at a reading level appropriate for mature elementary schoolers through high schoolers, and has some black-and-white watercolor illustrations. The best part, to my mind, is the section on humans, with a discussion on the body odors of different races, and how we perceive each other's smells. This topic would NEVER be discussed in a science book for kids today, which is too bad, because it is handled here very innocently and straightforwardly, and is actually very interesting.
