Secrets of the Toughest Tom

I first met Scarface Claw in HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON'S DAIRY. Since then he has popped up in a number of books by the author. Scarface Claw is the toughest tom in town. No dog or cat can stand up to him. All are afraid of him. At the catshow he was crowned Surliest Cat. But what is his real story? Is he really as tough as everyone thinks? This book gives us the answer. Scarface claw is not afraid of anything. Or so it would seem. The crash of thunder, the flash of lightning, the darkness of night all mean nothing to this cat. When the neighborhood dogs are after him he just lies down for a nap. Shrieking sirens do not faze him. It really looks like there is nothing that can scare this ferocious feline. But Scarface Claw has a secret. There is one thing, and one thing only, that has the power to scare this cat. The same thing that scares everyone else in town; Scarface Claw himself. This book is told in the same lyrical style so familiar to fans of the author. No knowledge of other books is needed in order to enjoy this one but fans familiar with other books will be able to recognize the local dogs when they put in their cameos. Lynley Dodd is probably the most popular author of children's books in New Zealand and this book is a good example of why that is. Like her other books the layout is deceptive with only a short sentence or two per page but the words used are not typical to a beginning reader. The language helps challenge children and increase their vocabulary while being entertaining to adults as well. Check it out.
