Sashiko Needle
You will need either long, or short Sashiko Needles depending on your project's design.
Sashiko Needles for Short
Short Sashiko Needles can be used to create round shapes.
Long Sashiko Needles
Long Sashiko Needles can be used to create straight lines. It is easier to stitch multiple stitches at once because of the length of this needle.

Sashiko Fabric
You can use a traditional dark blue evenweave fabric made from linen or cotton, which are heavier than broadcloth.
Evenweave fabrics are better than plain, tightly woven fabrics. Evenweave fabrics have an open structure that makes it easier for the needle to pass through layers of fabric.
Two layers of fabric can be used when making garments. Multiple layers will make your garment more warm as heat is insulated in the air pockets created while you are creating the designs.
Sashiko Thread
Traditional Sashiko uses a tightly twisted, heavy-weight cotton thread. Our 6 stranded embroideries floss is what I prefer to use, as it's readily available in Europe. You can also use fine crochet cotton in sizes 8 and 12.
Sashiko Pattern
Nature is often the source of inspiration for Sashiko designs. It is easy to recognize the rippling waters, clouds, and flowers. There are also stunning geometric designs that include interlocking lines, circles and squares as well as stars, squares, triangles, stars, squares and squares. You will often find repeating patterns in a project.
Most patterns have a common meaning or use. The Japanese home decor often features the Hishi "diamond shape" design. The Kikko beehive design "Kikko", is considered to be a symbol for good fortune.
