Should Not Be Missed

I have read this book numerous times during the last dozen or so years and each time it is a thrilling and exciting experience. I do not understand why this book has never been made into a movie since, in my opinion, it is the definitve work on the Vietnam War. I am a Vietnam era veteran and find the little touches in this book ( one of the grunts worries about a rumor he has heard that the Beatles have broken up ) ring so true. The book is humerous, exciting, realistic and unforgetable. READ THIS BOOK !

Incredible and extremely relevant

I first read this when I was sixteen and an avid reader, and thought it was the best book I had ever come across. After many years and becoming a Marine infantry officer, I recently read the book again and was forcefully struck by its power and authenticity. I am still an avid reader and I still think it is the best book I have ever read. This book should be a must read for any infantryman, regardless of branch of service. It far surpasses the likes of Lima 6 or even Fields of Fire. It is certainly worth the effort of locating and buying. For those "non-grunts" out there, I recommend it just as emphatically.

This book is important

This book was recomended to me by two Marines who served in Vietnam as infantry men. Both of these men emphatically endorse this book as the most realistic novel about their experience in Vietnam ever written. It is difficult to put into words the feeling it left me with, and each time I have read it through the years it impacts me differently. Anyone who appreciates the sacrifices made during the conflicts needs to read this. Thank God Robert Roth had the courage to write this novel so that future generations can learn and appreciate what these men went through.

gripping, compelling story of the horrors of war

As a former member of Robert Roth's platoon 1056 at Parris Island, I relived the sorrows and pain experienced while in Viet Nam. Truly a book which has missed it's place along side those which are now epic movies in their own right. Robert Roth or "Abi" as the Drill Instructors called him, has inspired a book which reflects his emotion, feelings, and intelligence. A must read for the Viet Vet searching for something, which for most of us, is unattainable. An informative book for the younger reader in search of understanding.

I Lived This Book

This is a very authentic recreation of action in Quag Nam Provence during 1968-1969. I served with Robert in the same squad. Many of the experiences throughout the book are my own and all are true with only some added interset in the love story. Robert joined our unit about six months into my tour and many of the stories were related to Robert. Robert sent me the manuscript to review before publishing. The last I heard from him he was off to Isreal to join the army. This was 1973-1974. Great job, " PROFFESSOR ".
