My purpose in this onomastic handbook of San Diego County is to record and preserve the history of most of its existing place-names. The study of a county's place-names is a way of seeing the district's history through a microscope rather than a telescope. Thereby the names on a county map may come to life as a permanent record of earlier personalties and events, and of geographical descriptions, that academically written histories generally do not include. The approximately 800 county names herein are largely in current use, of importance, or of special interest. Obsolete and vanished place-names are not included. Also not included are the place-names of neighborhoods, subdivisions, state or county beaches and parks, monuments, city streets, and highways. --- from book's Foreword
