Better than a 1 week course

My company sent me on a 1 week Java course at considerable cost. This book taught me more in 2 weeks of evening reading. Lessons stick to one-hour time frame throughout (instead of sneakily getting longer towards the end like some Sams books do). The authors humorous interjections are beneficial to the overall learning experience. An excellent introduction to Java and Object oriented programming, worth reading regradless of being superceded by Java 2.

Great book! Really helped...

I picked up a couple books on JSP and realized I needed to know more about Java. I didn't know anything... until I got this book.Well written, worded for a novice, this book will teach you the skills you need to become independent in Java programming. I highly recommend it.Rogers' sense of humor will crack you up as well. It was a pleasant and informative book. I highly recommend it.

Author is dead on

This book is not for everyone and was never meant to be. The Author is trying to hit individuals who have never programmed. He succeded in this. It does drop off a little bit in Chapt. 10 but JAVA programming does this to everybody. This book is not meant to be a reference. See O'Rielly for that. My only complaint is that he stuck to Swing to teach readers hot to create GUI's. There are other, older, and more stable methods than Swing.

24 hours of Pure Java Education

Before I read this book I was very unexperienced with Java. After reading it I found that I could write small applications and some applets. This was a tremendous leap for me and now I am contimplating on buying the Teach yourself Java in 21 days book. Some code errors exist but the online documantation is up to date and very helpful. I recommend this book for a beginner intrested in Java. This is not a boring, lecture clustered, book. The author does a fine job of keeping the readers attention. For those with some Java experience, this would be mostly review, but none-the-less a good book. By best reguards to Mr. Cadenhead, the author.

Great way to start

I haven't read this book -- I read its predecessor Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 24 Hours. I felt that it was a great way for me to get started with Java. It made things very easy for me!The book doesn't get terribly deep... at the end, you will want to get another book to learn more. After finishing Java 1.1 in 24 Hours, they recommended that I buy Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 21 Days, because it goes into more depth. Unfortunately, that book is much more confusing and disorganized, and also makes a lot of assumptions about what you know. The 21 Days book seems to be written for people who are already professional programmers in other languages. The 24 Hours book is great at starting from scratch and explaining everything. Rogers Cadenhead writes in a clear style that is also light and amusing.
