Everett Anderson's 1*2*3 is a wonderful book about a young boy, Everett Anderson, who id trying to deal with a new stepfather added to the picture. He thinks that one or two people are fine in the house but three is too many. Finally, he discovers that three may not be too bad after all. Even though this book was published in 1977, it does not contain outdated material. It offers solutions to how to cope with an added stepparent. The subject matter, stepfamilies is interesting and the book is engaging to read. I feel, with the vocabulary in this book, it would be suitable for 1st and 2nd graders. It may be suitable for pre-kindergarteners, depending on their reading abilities. If a teacher/parent read this book aloud, it would be suitable for grades K-2nd. This book is 27 pages long, but half of the pages are pictures only. This book takes about three to four minutes to read. If it was read aloud by a teacher/parent, it may take longer to read because of questions that are asked by the child. The book is a suitable length for K-2nd grade, and it can be utilized for children with learning disabilities. The text contains a paragraph for every other page. I do not feel this would be too much text for K-2nd graders. This book contains beautiful pictures on every other page, along with text on every other page. The artist used watercolors on each page, which catches the attention of readers. This helps children/readers to stay interested in the story visually as well as listening to the text being read. The developmental level of the text can somewhat vary. This book could be read by a number of grades, depending on the ability levels of the students. The main character, Everett Anderson, seems to be about seven years old. The themes match the developmental level of grades 1st through 2nd, and sometimes Pre-K or 3rd. This book can be used with children at a variety of developmental levels. This book contains the diversity factor of stepfamilies. Everett Anderson has to understand why he has to have a new stepfather, and he has to understand that the stepfather will not replace him. It also contains a diversity factor of ethnicity.
