Brilliantly witty and sincere

One of my all time favourite Quebecois writers, Jacques Godbout delivers magnificently in this short yet powerful novel. "Salut Galarneau!" takes a real plunge into life in the 70s in Montreal. Complete with cultural, political and economical references, the ever-present fatalist mentality, the malfunctioning family, the grandiose writer dream, and of course a healthy dose of Godboutian black humour, this is a novel to be reread many a time, analyzed and properly dissected. The original in French is highly recommended and superior in my opinion to any translation. Moreover, the liberal use of anglicisms, brand names and Quebecois colloquialisms accurately reflect the reality of the times and constitute the charm of the book, even if it means looking up quite a few references. Overall, the ultimate novel of the 1970s Quebec.
