Kids know best in this historical fiction

I was looking for historical fiction around the American Revolution. This book had some good descriptions but I was unimpressed with the relationships of the book. As typical for books written after a certain date, the kids know best and they teach the parents. Also, the heroine is a tween girl who has the responsibility of making deliveries on horseback in colonial America by herself...not something that I think would have happened then or would be safe. As an adult, this is not what I want my kids to read regardless of the historical setting.
