Research on Puerto Rican spiritism has been carried out from various perspectives, each reflecting the theoretical fashion of its time (Ortner, 1984). Each perspective emphasizes a different aspect of this vital religious tradition, and all omit certain aspects entirely. I begin this paperback edition of Rx: Spiritist as Needed by reviewing these perspectives, as a way both of bringing the reader up to date on what is currently known about spiritism and of indicating the gaps that still exist in our information.
