Helped me to get going!!!

This book is not meant to be the ultimate reference for access it did exactly for me what i expected. It got me started into the world of Access programming. It was long and did over explain a lot, but that was what i needed at the time. SO for me, it was perfect. As a bonus, when i was in a rut and i needed an answer i found the authors Email address in the book and he helped to steer me in the right direction a couple of times. Now I have moved on to more technical books about the Access world, but i am very thankful for the groundwork this book helped me to lay down.

The best book on Access

To teach an intermediate course on Access I had to read most of the Access books in the market. By far this is the best one as it takes the reader from the very basics to advanced programming in Visual Basic for Applications. Too bad that Mr. Viescas did not write the Access 2000 version.

Running Microsoft Access 2000

It's a very good book on Access. I have used all 3 versions (95,97, and 2000) and learnt lot from the books. The examples in the book are very useful but left some puzzls for readers to figuer out. If the author can write, or get somebody to write, a solution book or "student guide", to show readers how the example application were made (especially some tricky parts), it will definitely become a "5 stars +" book on Access.

Content filled

I'm probably 4.5 stars. The pluses are that this book covers a lot, esp. for something called "running access 2000". e.g. it covers a good amount of programming. It's also clearly written. My one critique is the examples, which are integral to the book. The book skips between three sets of examples. The examples have a lot of forms, and some can take some analysis. I would have prefered one example that was built up in a more consistent fashion, one one main example with other minor ones if essential. My minor critiques would be that (a) chapters are by listed techniques (e.g. Visual Basic Fundamentals) whereas a subhead (automating data entry) might have been as relevant.(b) I think he is least clear (or too terse) on designing a "good" database (like how to set up tables and relationships) (c) a "for more info" bibliography would be invaluable (e.g. a great VB book). Finally, and this is *not* a critique, just an observation, this book is NOT a reference (lord knows how many volumes a reference would take....)

Excellent coverage of Microsoft Access 2000

After reading Mr. Viescas' previous book, "Running Microsoft Access 97," and learning a lot about this program, I was glad to see that he has written a similar book on Microsoft Access 2000. This book, while similar in style and content to the Access 97 book, reflects the upgrade that Microsoft has made to this program. As in Mr. Viescas' Access 97 book, this one takes you from the basics of Access and guides you gently through very complex, but practical, exercises. As with Access 97, I feel that I have mastered the basic concepts of Access 2000. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to move from Access 97 to Access 2000 or to someone who wants to learn the program from "scratch."
