What a work is a book when both the writer and artist merge talents for a tug-at-the-heart story. Little Beth gets a new kitten for her very own and loves, loves, loves her. She calls her Rumble Tum. Over the pages the reader sees the kitten growing, playing, becoming a member of the family. But as in the lives of most pets, a mishap occurs. During a thunder and lightning storm, Rumble Tum gets out of the house and scrambles away in fright. They cannot find her. Not Beth. Not her older brother Jackson. Not Dad. Mom assures her that Rumble Tum will return. After the storm Beth finally finds her, curled up in a basket with a neighbor's dog. What makes this book so special is the close bond between child and kitten. This would make a great primer for families planning on getting a pet for their children or child. It shows just how a child should care for a pet with food, shelter, and most of all, love. The illustrations are just perfect. The book flap indicates that the illustrator does have a cat. For sure he knows their gestures and ways. Also his depictions of the girl's face showing all manner of emotion are amazing. All in all, this is a lovely book to give a child.
