We got this story in a larger collection of British kids' picture books. It's definitely one of the best. Ruby is a stuffed bear that wasn't sewn right in the factory, so she gets stamped with an S (second best) and tossed into a pile of other mistakes. Thanks to her perseverence, she is able to escape and have a happy ending. Ruby doesn't exactly have a sappy personality. As Susie, the little girl at the end of the book, says, "She's got a growl." Ruby's voice, and the expressive colored-pencil pictures, make this story come alive.
Ruby deserves better

As a mother of three, I've read innumerable children's books over the years, and I would have to say that Ruby is my favorite. This is a bear who teaches us what it means to have "character." I wish more children's books could be this entertaining and enlightening.
