Priceless Rubies: A Great Practical and Actionable Guide to Creating a Successful Business

Hi there! Welcome. If you are reading this review, then, like many individuals before you (including myself), you too are seeking ways to improve your business, to create a successful one, and/or to enhance your knowledge? If so, congratulations! You have found the perfect book to aid you in reaching your goal(s). Please allow me to enlighten you. Rubies in the Orchard: How to Uncover the Hidden Gems in Your Business by Lynda Resnick (a.k.a. the POM Queen, a brilliant and successful marketing professional) is a wonderful book of priceless rubies. Though interpreted as both a proselytizing left-wing political document on global warming and a poor narcissistic excuse at self-promotion by her harshest critics, I believe it is nevertheless a great practical and actionable guide to creating a successful business and marketing anything that has intrinsic value. An important key to remember is that your inputs determine your outputs. In other words, what you get out of any book is what you put into it. It is no less true for Rubies in the Orchard. That said, to create a successful business and to survive and thrive in today and tomorrow's business environment, the bottom line is this: "When all is said and done, there is only one sure route to survival in any market, and one hedge against irrelevance and obsolescence: cultivate the rubies in the orchard. Locate the intrinsic value of your brand, work to understand it and nurture it--even when that brand is you yourself. Communicate that value honestly and creatively. If you do, you will build the kind of faith in your brand that can overcome tough competition, hard times, cheap shots, and even a roller coaster of a new century" (Chapter 10, Page 185). In the book, Ms. Resnick mentions, explains, and illustrates strategies and tactics of how to do this. Throughout the book, she doesn't just tell you about marketing. Instead, she is gracious enough to show you through her own trials and errors and her own successes and failures. With her captivating and simple yet elegant finesse with words, she takes you on a personal journey. By inviting you into her life, you will literally walk in her shoes, think like the POM Queen herself, enjoy her triumphs, and experience her woes. If you let her, Ms. Resnick will create a paradigm shift--she will broaden your perspective on the future of business and business in general. Ultimately, what Ms. Resnick achieves is beautiful and promethean. It is bigger than herself. Without a formal college education, she evinces that creating a successful business is very possible. To do so, however, begins with cultivating the rubies in the orchard that is yourself.

A friend from Teleflora

Excellent book, very well written, Lynda is a friend of mine, I worked for her with Teleflora, my only problem - I ordered one book and received three - when I tried to return two, I was refused because you said I had only bought one so I could only return one. I now have two, I returned one. This is one women to follow if you want to be successful in business.

A motivational and inspirational gem for would be marketers

If you're in search of a book that will teach you the intricacies of marketing, or in need of analytical study of marketing tactics and techniques, this isn't the book for you. But "Rubies in the Orchard" is a precious gem and a must read for anyone looking for a book that will motivate them and get them into the positive, proactive, "can do" mindset that is necessary to become a successful marketer. The book takes you on a journey through the author's adult life and shows us how she became an immensely successful marketer, building some of the best known brands in the world. Most impressive to me is the fact that this book promotes integrity in both marketing tactics as well as the product you are selling. Ms. Resnick teaches how she earnestly believed in every product she sold, and how she invested time, effort, and money into creating high quality products, and even made sure that every aspect of the production, distribution, and sales of her products met with the highest standards of integrity and social responsibility. This book should be required reading for every person who intends to market a product, service, or themselves, and I really took the ideals and principles laid out in this book to heart. And I think you will too.

Lynda Resnick's marketing and brand-building skills are the stuff of legend

I recommend you buy the Unabridged Audio CD version of Lynda Resnick's enjoyable book, Rubies in the Orchard. She has a pleasing, compelling voice that goes down like a friend sitting next to you in your car as you drive...with the single exception that this friend has one of the most amazing track records as a brand-builder on record. Teleflora. The Franklin Mint. POM Wonderful. FIJI Water. Husband Stewart may find the businesses and do the financial legwork to acquire them. But it's Lynda that super-charges them and makes them mainstays of consumer life. Her marketing touch - especially her unmatched skills at product placement and leveraging high-powered, carefully nurtured friendships - is the stuff of legend, and deservedly so. In "Rubies in the Orchard" she demonstrates that her success is no fluke. How could it be, with that many notches on her belt? In this book, she reveals herself to be someone masterful at details and a keen observer. She is resolutely focused on finding her brand's "key selling proposition" and bringing it to the public's awareness. Lynda Resnick is nothing less than an American treasure.

Rubies in Her Orchard . . . Rubies in Your Own Backyard!

Lynda Resnick has not written the perfect marketing book - but there's plenty in this volume to invigorate even the most seasoned marketer. An easy read, her book combines good storytelling with invaluable business lessons that may prove to be even more important during a recession (depression?) than in more normal times. Which lessons may help? 1. You get a lot farther in life by showing what you don't know and asking for help than you do pretending you know it all. 2. What good are advertising, marketing and design if the product is junk? 3. Emphasis on the short term almost always comes at the expense of the long term. 4. . . . the absence of value, sooner or later, is always exposed and penalized. In these days of unrestrained greed, these lessons have been relegated to the circular file all too often. Nowadays, you might be more surprised to find products that actually measure up to their advertising than ones that fall far short of the hype. Lynda's focus on value is refreshing, and it will be more and more important as our society is transformed by "hard times." Is she completely consistent? No. Shipping water half way across the world is not consistent with a goal of reducing waste. And promoting a point of view (Gore's global warming) as though it were fact rather than theory is at odds with her focus on honesty and disclosure. Nevertheless, this is a book worth reading. The rubies are to be found in quality, and bringing back an emphasis on quality will help us speed through a difficult time in our national life.
