A Special Little Book

The prairies which occupy vast areas of the United States and Canada are notably difficult places to grow roses. Icy winds in winter and broiling sun in summertime do not offer optimum conditions for the cultivation of the Queen of Flowers. However, George Shewchuk persisted in his quest to grow these beautiful flowers and he has noted his successes and difficulties in this compact, informative volume. The hands-on knowledge acquired over many years by this intrepid gardener (and professor of Agriculture in Alberta, Canada) will be useful to any rose grower, not just those facing the particular conditions with which Shewchuk struggled. The chapters on pests and diseases are universally applicable. There are many suggestions for roses which can tolerate marginal habitats. The book is small enough to serve as a field guide, fitting neatly into a pocket or backpack. Overall, this is a unique and fascinating treatise on the subject of roses.
