Rogue Symmetry: Dorks, Dandruff, and Jellybeans is the first single panel comic book by cartoonist, Derrick G. Wood. Introduction: Awakening with a giggle. Covered in sweat. That is how Rogue Symmetry began. The idea of a health food vending machine placed right next to a soda machine was how it started in the dream. Then the familiar, "I'm with stupid" t-shirt descended from a cloud, transformed into a sign, and rested proudly upon the healthy snack receptacle. When I woke up, I jotted it down in my notebook. Until this time, that book was filled with story ideas, poetry, and wanna-be-but-never-will-be song lyrics. This was something new. Something much more uplifting and profound. This was something that actually made me feel good. Over the next couple months, I filled up several journals with every funny little cartoon that popped into my head. It wasn't like I was trying to think up funny stuff, but rather, like someone was pushing these ideas into my mind. Having never seriously drawn before, it took me a while to realize that I should try and draw one of these cartoons out and make it look like a real comic. I decided to start with the vending machine idea. It didn't come out as I had envisioned it, and though I was disappointed to discover that I wasn't an instant Bill Watterson, I told myself that I wouldn't give up. I colored that cartoon and immediately created a blog where people could laugh at my ideas and watch as I improve my art skills. When we look at comics in the paper or online, we generally see the result of the cartoonist's hard work and dedicated years of practice. We don't get to see them struggle to draw a hand, figure out which fonts to use, how to create backgrounds, or how to color their creations. No, it is there exactly as the creator intended it to look. Not with Rogue Symmetry. This book covers my VERY first cartoon and takes you along my awkward journey, my struggle, to figure out this thing called drawing. Like watching a bird's first flight (which is usually its first fall too), it isn't always going to be pretty. The key is to get up on the tree and jump again Rogue Symmetry won't be the best drawn comic you've ever seen, but it will be the most honest. "Warts and all" as they say. -Derrick G.
