The Palliser Expedition is one of the great works in Canadian exploration literature and the only full-scale account of the British North America Exploring Expedition. This lively narrative tells of the famous adventures of John Palliser, one of the first to explore and document vast areas of what is now western Canada. Palliser and his colleages accumulated a wealth of new scientific and geological knowledge, providing some of the first detailed information about the plants, animals, soil, rocks, and climate of the land they had traversed. They discovered formerly unknown passes through the Rocky Mountains, and determined that much of this immense country was suitable for settlement. Spry describes what was known about the prairies in the late 1850s and why the British government accepted Palliser's proposal to dispatch a team to the area between Lake Superior and the Pacific Coast. She explains what the expedition learned during its three years, offering at the same time an initmate understanding of these men and their perspective on the region. Much more than the story of a scientific survey, The Palliser Expedition provides a revealing look at the western interior in the last years of the Old Northwest before it became home to countless thousands of homesteaders.
This is my two-year-old's favorite book. She understands the humor of the story: a farmer rocks his baby goodnight, and then rocks each of his farm animals goodnight (including his horse and cow. You'll have to see the book to understand how he is able to rock such large animals). The pictures are wonderful, the words are few. Your child will ask for it again and again.
A lasting favorite for our two small children

Simple text and colorful pictures make it a first rate introduction to reading; both our kids learned how to sit through a bedtime story with this soothing tale of a barnyard evening. We ALL want to know where the mouse went at the end!

Well, this is it. Our copy of this book is so well loved that I must find another copy! Bring it back as a board book also! The fun illustrations and simple text (which we sing to the tune of Hi Ho the derrio) are both stimulating and soothing for my 14 month old. As soon as the book is open she is pointing and rocking! This is right on par with Good Night Moon.
An excellent children's book

This is an unusually good children's book. It is most unfortunate that it is out of print. We are still searching for another new copy.
Bedtime wouldn't be bedtime without Rockabye Farm.

Our 2-yr-old son loves Rockabye Farm. We've read it every night for months and he has it memorized. It's simplicity and captivating illustrations make it a classic. Our son seems to find comfort in the fact that the animals and "Mommy and Daddy Farmer" go to bed after the baby is in his crib. I'm so sad that this book is now out of print.
