Mechanical Design, Diagrams, and historical narratives of industrial robots

This book is a catalogue of robot types and models and their history. The author covers various domains of robot functionality: wrist actuators, elbow, shoulder, fingers, and legs. The book diagrams the mechanical design of various robots through out history: the spray painting arm by DeVilbiss Company, the Universal Transfer Device by Planet Corporation and American Machine Foundry, the First polar coordinate by Unimate. Polar coordinate systems spread too 60% of the automobile industry and had load capacity of 300 lbs and weighed 2,796 to 5,000 lbs. Veristan-Versatile Transfer Machine by American Foundry Company and Prab Robotics demonstrated rotary yaw shoulder, cylindrical coordinate system with vertical up and down movement and a load capacity of 100 lbs. Programmable Universal Manipulator for Assembly, PUMA changed robotics moving from hydraulic to electrical actuators. This was a brilliant move, as researchers discovered, 90% of the components in a car weight less than 5 lbs. PUMA had six axis movement and a revolute arm powered by direct current. Other robots were too follow, such as, Graco Robot created by inventor Ole Moloug, the father of spray finishing robots.

Beautiful pictures.

Drawings and pictures in this book are awesome. This book covers the history of robotics from ancient time till 1980's. Some of the future stories in this book have come to real already. Very enjoyable for all robotics fans.

Very fun to read.

This book was very fun to read. Plenty of nice pictures and figures. This book will give you an overview of the history of anthrobotics until the mid 90s. After this book was published anthrobotics progressed dramatically, and some of the dream stories in the last chapter became real.
