Robinson: Rebuilding a Post-Collapse World

Robinson was born, bred, and educated in preparation for a future time when surviving on one's own would be paramount. Once the worst of the collapse had finally taken its fatal toll, he was also destined to be a key contributor to mankind's future.
Two decades or so later, a disturbing trend began. Even though immunologists had been keeping up with the new Covid variants, each new one seemed far more virulent and deadlier than the previous version. They were so contagious that it was becoming next to impossible to keep up with the newest iteration. Vaccines were getting so specialized that manufacturing couldn't keep up with the demand. In other words, commercial labs were the only source of new vaccines. That meant they were incredibly rare. That meant that only the select few were fortunate enough to receive them.
In conjunction with that trend was yet another worrisome concern. Scientists, and immunologists, in particular, began disappearing. The best and most educated simply vanished. That meant that as an immunologist, Robinson's father knew he was a potential target. If his global contemporaries and business counterparts were disappearing, he knew he might be next. That was when he finally understood what was happening. Wealthy businessmen, oligarchs, and other powerful men knew the pandemic was increasingly getting worse. Consequently, self-preservation became their primary motivation. In an effort to sustain their and their families' existence, they were willing to disregard the needs of the masses.
At the same time, and when the world was failing to address the climate crisis, men and women with forward-thinking knew they would have to intervene. If the government and heads of industry weren't going to rise to the occasion, a private group of concerned individuals would. That, however, didn't mean they could solve something so massively out of control that it had gone well beyond the tipping point. The most that they could do was to plan wisely for the time when the repopulation project would have a chance to be initiated. But it would be on a controlled scale. And that was a defining aspect of Robinson's anticipated role.
