This otherwise excellent book is full of editing errors - typos, grammar mistakes, etc - which is the only reason I rated it at 4 stars instead of 5. The scholarship is sound, and the author's own prose - which is where the errors are - exists mainly to frame excerps from the letters and journals of actual participants in the Gettysburg Campaign. The source material includes the words of major figures such as Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain as well as lesser known line officers and common soldiers. Also included are excerpts from the writings of civilian witnesses to the Confederate retreat. The bibliography is excellent and added numerous titles to my rare book-finding quest.Bottom line - closer editing would have been good, but this book makes excellent use of original source material to shed light on an often overlooked aspect of the American Civil War.
