Great American History Book

I used to teach American History from this book. It also was my text book in high school. Between it and great teaching I CLEPed a whole year of college American History and only missed two questions. The nice thing about the 1968 edition is the supplemental readings at the end of sections that reflect the period. These cover all sorts of topics. I remember being brought in as a book consultant by a major text book company and they asked me what I wanted. When I told them to construct a book like this one with supplemental readings they told me "that's not economically possible." I then showed them my old copies and they just shook their heads and said, "No one can afford that anymore." They then wanted me to endorse pretty much a picture book for high school history. I declined. If you are home schooling this text will give your student a solid grounding in US history. If you want political correctness, cultural diversity, and that "kumbaya feeling" its not here. I disagree with the other reviewer who thinks this two volume text is "too patriotic." It does view the history of America favorably instead of bemoaning our existence and trying to excuse it. The supplemental readings as well as some parts of the book imply that better decisions might have been made but it doesn't belabor these events and leaves judgments up to readers. They are textbooks. A place to begin a study of US history. But they are a very solid text.
