stronger in story than style but strangely hopeful and funny

I read this book many, many years ago and found it quirky, smart, and full of hope. It's the story of an aging adolescent with schizo-affective disorder and low self-esteem who battles her family and society in an effort to find her place, both in the world and in her mind. It's a funny and tragic contemporary story that asks what is sanity? and is it worth it? The whimsical style is tough to write, and this author (a pseudonym, I believe) pulls it off O.K.
