In this volume, Mary Wanless discusses the underlying principles of riding as she sees them. Eleven illustrated lessons demonstrate these theories, which are based on increasing each rider's understanding of what "is", instead of what "ought to be".
This book turned the unknown and terrifying into the wonerful world of riding I know today. It is an easy to read, practical guide that you will not want to let out of your sight, and will want to read and refer to time and time again.
Wonderful book

After reading this book I am finally able to understand what my trainers have been trying to tell me to do for years. Mary is able to explain things very clearly. You will be amazed at how much this book can help you.
Very explainatory. Just like you would be there in person.

I found this book to be one of the best books for horse and rider awareness (horsemanship). Giving examples of imagery, and pictures of problems and correctness. The photos give the reader a sence of understanding while reading the text.
What Most Instructors Won't Teach
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 26 years ago
For years I struggled with learning how my anatomy and my position on a horse effected the horse's movement. For the first time, it is explained in exquisite detail with easy to understand analogies. This book is not for the casual rider or the rider who is not willing to let go of the past and try something that seems to be radical. Riding with your mind does not mean your body doesn't work. I have never used so many muscles in so many ways on horseback. If you want a happily forward horse, with a relaxed back and a good attitude, follow Mary's methods. I have not found a horse or student that hasn't improved since I started studying her books. AND after endless years of discomfort I can finally sit the trot.
Finally, someone actually explains how to ride

This book finally allowed me to understand what my riding instructors were actually asking me to do. Mary Wanless explains, in detail, with plenty of actual photographs, how exactly anyone can achieve that perfect, balanced seat.
