For Sandy Hawley/Southern California/Canadian Racing Fans

This is an autobiography by the great jockey, Sandy Hawley. I was fortunate to see Mr. Hawley ride in Southern California in the 70's and 80's and always respected his effort and enjoyed his success. He seemed to be one of the good guys and it was sad when he was stricken with cancer. I enjoyed this book and would expect those similarly situated to enjoy it also. However, it reads more like a narrative than an insight into what it meant to go from the Canadian racing circuit to the top of the world only to have it taken away by illness. I suspect that this shortcoming is the result of Mr. Hawley's obvious view that all-in-all, things will turn out all right. At the end, my admiration for Mr. Hawley was confirmed. He was someone you would want to know. I was disappointed in the lack of insight. (On a stylistic note, I found the writing somewhat awkward particularly in that it seemed choppy and lacked flow.) All that said, I would recommend it to those who enjoyed Sandy Hawley career and those who are interested in horse racing. Incidentally, although he doesn't complain, it seems that Mr. Hawley's lack of Triple Crown success has resulted in an under-appreciation of his accomplishments.
