I was born in Cuba, 90 miles from Key West, Florida. Life had treated me well until Fidel Castro declared himself a Communist. He came with promises of free education, free medical care, and a system of equality for all people. As the repression showed its strength, executions, forced labor, deportation, and beatings were an almost everyday occurrence. However, during our painful journey of losing everything we owned, we gained our most valuable possession-our freedom. This is my story.
