Book Overview

As a young man living in England at the time of the Allied Landing at Dieppe, Canadian novelist and screenwriter Ernest Langford acquired a special affection for the Canadian soldiers who fought so valiantly and suffered so harshly in the ill-fated raid.On August 19,1942, Major-General J. M. Roberts led 5000 troops of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division in Operation jubilee, a raid on the small, Nazi-occupied town of Dieppe, France. Nine hours later, 900 Canadian men were dead and 1300 had been taken prisoner. This historical novel opens in the months immediately before the raid at Dieppe, when four young volunteers - who form an incongruous sampling of British Columbia's youth - meet in training camp and agree to stay together. By the time they cross the English Channel and drop into the water on the morning of August 19,1942, the reader is caught up in the story of these raw recruits and the fate each of them meet. Rendezvous at Dieppe is a tribute to the hundreds of Canadian men who passed the ultimate test of honour and courage at Dieppe. The book is published on the 50th anniversary of the Dieppe raid.
