Carmen was very well taken care of financially, but her emotions were in turmoil. There was nothing that she was in need of materially, because she was born into a well to do family. What Carmen really needed was the emotional support of those that said they loved her. She didn't have the support that she needed. She was afraid to speak up because, in her family, speaking up about anything was a form of complaining. When her uncle started molesting her he instilled fear in her, and told her not to tell anyone. Carmen obeyed her uncle as she had been taught to do. Carmen was confused because her uncle told her she was special, but she wasn't supposed to tell anyone why she was so special. She was perplexed at the tender age of six. When she sought answers for the questions in her mind, she received none. She was confused on many different levels because of the lack of communication in her family about forbidden topics. Sex was a topic that was never discussed.
