It started on a cold December day with a cabin-fever-induced plan to drive every county road in rural Whitman County, in southeastern Washington State. Two and a half years, 658 roads, and probably 10,000 miles later, Martha Mullen completed her journey. She has explored cemeteries and recreation areas, hiked trails and climbed buttes, eaten in small town cafes, attended community events and celebrations, and listened to people's stories. Along the way, she also photographed and often tracked down the history of structures that caught her eye-pioneer churches, abandoned homesteads, railroad trestles, recycled one-room schools, barns, elevators, and old grain conveyance devices. Part travel guide, part history, part memoir, Reflections on the Road is simply a reflection of the author's love affair with this unique and continually surprising section of the country.
