Reflecting His Image: Discovering Your Worth in Christ from A to Z

Liz Curtis Higgs describes herself as an encourager; in fact, she actually holds the copyright for the phrase "An Encourager". She is an award-winning writer of over 25 non-fictional, children's and fictional books. Making her home with her husband and two college-aged children in a historic farm house in Louisville, KY, Liz has become most famous for her books on "Bad Women of the Bible". Beyond her accomplishments as an author, Liz is known as a gifted Christian speaker, ministering around the world sharing her life and insights with her very honest and humorous heart. From the book, Reflecting His Image, an earlier work from 1996, we find that the writer is a marvelous example of the transforming power of Jesus. Before she knew Christ, her life was empty, vainly attempting to find fulfillment in parties, bars, smoking marijuana, getting drunk and chasing guys. She worked in the radio industry with unsavory types of Howard Stern, known for his controversial talk show that usually tries to sink to new moral lows. I mention this only to highlight the radical change in this woman's life. I would definitely recommend this book to readers desiring an inspirational and fresh look at some basic characteristics of God and for a heartening view of who we are as children of God. She attempts to answer questions of "Who is God?" as well as "Who are we in God?" This devotional book, as you might guess from the subtitle, is organized topically from A to Z. It begins with a scripture verse or two, selects a trait of God in alphabetical order, and describes that aspect usually anecdotally. An example of the way the book is set-up would be, for the letter `D' God is described as our Deliverer and `d' that we are His Disciple. It may be subtle but by merely using the upper case letter for God's character and the lower case for us, it reinforced for me that our eyes are always to be on Him. Some other chapter titles demonstrating the structure of the book would be, for instance, He is the Name above all names, you are a new creation, and He is the Resurrection, you are redeemed. Somewhat worried that the book would be just focused on building up a low self-esteem with the power of positive thinking, I really appreciated the way these listed attributes of God were carefully interwoven with solid Biblical statements of who we are in Christ. Each section also ended with a straight forward albeit simple prayer. The honesty of this author was revitalizing; throughout the book Liz shared from a welcoming, first name perspective, as a friend sharing her heart, opening up about past, personal struggles and finding help from her faith in Jesus. This transparency reassures the reader of the reality of her words. One can witness the "makeover" of her soul as she grapples with the challenges of life to arrive at healing and wholeness. The key to this successful transformation is maintaining our focus on reflecting the image of our creative and almighty
