a spellbinding tale

According to lore many centuries ago a clan killed the children of the Thunder god. For their crimes, they were banished to a half existence in the land of mists. Once a generation, a brave is selected and given the opportunity to save his clan from the curse. Many have failed and been doomed to permanent separation from the rest of the Lost Clan. This generation an unlikely candidate is selected - an orphan who had been adopted into the clan when his parents were killed by the Thunderer. His name is Red Hawk. As a child, Effie Rutledge adored her father and learned all about the study of archaeology from him. At the age of eight she first heard him talk about some amazing artifacts and the legend of the Lost Clan. The thought of people forced to live within the mists fascinates her and it's with a sense of awe that she takes on an all consuming interest in the Lost Clan and completing the project that her father had taken to heart - retrieving the four solid gold artifacts believed to hold the spirits of the children of the Thunder god. Red Hawk first enounters Effie right after emerging from the mist. Barely more than a boy, he's mystified by her white skin and the bizarre clothing she wears. Effie has no idea that the boy she meets comes from the Lost Clan but she quickly becomes friends with him despite the fact that neither of them can understand each other. They frolic in the water hole until it's time for her to return to her parents. It'll be many years before they see each other again but neither of them is ever very far from the memory of the other. When they once again meet years later, Effie has taken over her father's project and Red Hawk has learned that there's a strong possibility that his and Effie's fates are to walk the same path. They're both searching for a way to free the Lost Clan, but trusting each other isn't going to be easy. They've both got secrets that they aren't willing to share and there's an undeniable sexual tension that has them both wondering `what if?' Will they find the other artifacts necessary to free his people? Can all of the people in Effie's excavation party be trusted? There are circumstances and occurrences that have Effie wondering who she can trust. Will Effie and Red Hawk's growing affection bring the wrath of the Thunder god and destroy the future of the Lost Clan? Karen Kay tells a spellbinding tale with the third book in her `Lost Clan' series, RED HAWK'S WOMAN. This book contains fascinating characters, an ancient curse, Indian beliefs, suspense, and a fledgling love between the main characters that will have you reading late into the night. I loved the emotional appeal that Ms. Kay brings to Effie and Red Hawk's tale by combining their growing desire for each other with the need to save his clan from the mist. They're characters that you're drawn to and want to learn more about. What I didn't expect was the immense amount of respect I felt regarding Red Hawk and his de

delightful Indian romantic fantasy

The Lost Clan tribal bands are cursed to live in the ephemeral realm between life and death because their ancestors killed four of Thunderer's children. Two days a year the Chosen One will live on the mortal plane as he is the tribe's only hope for them to escape the curse, but the crosser must perform a heroic sacrificial deed by the time he is thirty or the tribe remains locked in the shadows. In 1848 during one of his trips onto the mortal plane the least likely Chosen One Red Hawk meets and is attracted to Effie Rutledge, but though time runs out on these two youngsters, neither forgot the other. Effie, a daughter of an archeologist, has made it her life's work to find four artifacts that she believes will free the Lost Clan and bring back Red Hawk to her. In 1866 Effie and Red Hawk meet again though she does not recognize the adult him as the star of her dreams. He panics as his time for being a hero is almost gone, which means never again seeing his beloved Effie. Together they search for a way for Red Hawk to complete his quest on time even as the gods try to prevent him from achieving his goal. Moving on into the second half of the nineteenth century, Karen Kay keeps fresh her delightful Indian romantic fantasy even as the premise remains the same as the previous stories in her saga (see THE SPIRIT OF THE WOLF and THE ANGEL AND THE WARRIOR). Red Hawk is a strong protagonist tasting failure as his clock is running out yet also feels optimistic due to Effie although he also knows he may have give up love to save his Lost Clan. His desperation Hail Mary with his beloved assisting and keeping him safe from the wrath of Thunderer makes for an entertaining tale. Harriet Klausner
