I don't want anybody to think that this is not a well-written, well-researched, and otherwise excellent book. It is all of these things. It just isn't quite what I was looking for, which was a book about artillery as used in the Great Patriotic War. So, what IS this book about? Well, there are several brief chapters on the origins of Russian and then Soviet artillery, with much useful information. The bulk of the book, however, is a deep analysis of Soviet artillery weapons, tactics, organization, and personalities as of the last days of the Cold War. An excellent coverage of its subject, but somewhat dated now, what with the collapse of the USSR and the crumbling of the Red Army into a shell of its former self. So was it worth the purchase? Yes, for me it was, for the information on operations in the Great Patriotic War. It might not be for everyone, though, especially as the book is sometimes sold at very inflated prices, used.Yours, James D. Gray
