A Nice Introductory Book About Foxes

This book is a nice account of a red fox family that lives behind a yellow house at Hickory Lane. It follows the family of foxes from the time when the kits are ready to play outside the den and discusses how in autumn they will leave their parents to survive on their own. This book is a nice change of pace from a mother fox story. Though it talks about the vixen caring for the kits, it focuses mainly on the father's role in the fox family's survival. The illustrations are large and richly detailed. (Lots of stuff for little eyes to look at.) There is also a small, "About the Red Fox", section in the back. My only complaint would be that rather than referring to the baby foxes as "kits", the proper name for fox babies (though sometimes pup is used informally as well), in this book they are called "cubs". It is a common mistake, but one that probably should have been double-checked before using in an educational children's book. But other than the "kit vs. cub" wording, this book works as a good introduction to a fox family or could make a nice starter study on common backyard wildlife.
