Great Hardboilded Detective Stories

The Red Diamond series by Mark Schorr is regrettably only a a three book series. Schorr takes the writing style of Raymond Chandler and Howard Browne and applies it to his unlikely detective a NYC hack named Simon Jaffee. Jaffee is a collector of Black Mask and other vintage detective mags and finds solice sitting and recounting the tales of Marlow, Spade and the like, away from his nagging wife. After witnessing a violent murder, Jaffee becomes traumatized and suddenly transforms into his favorite gumshoe--Red Diamond. The writing is tight, humorous and a thorough joy to read. This is only a trilogy starting with "Red Diamond, Private Eye", then "Ace of Diamonds" and finishes with "Diamond Rock". Find them used and read them in order if possible. I long for the day when Mark Schorr picks this series back up where it left off.
