Crackling good political mystery

Recount is David Everson's first book, featuring Springfield, Illinois, private eye Bobby Miles. Miles is close to the Speaker of the Illinois House, and is frequently called to investigate and help clean up political scandals. I picked up this book while visiting Springfield last month and, frankly, expected little more than a mediocre, local-color literature. Delighted was I to find that Everson's talents at detective fiction are of the very top rank. His dialogue crackles, his characters brim with life, and his plots are intricate and fast-paced. Everson tells Miles's story in the first person, with liberal helpings of sarcasm, slang, and cynicism, yet without ever turning Miles into an amoralist. No, Miles remains fundamentally good, as he tries to uproot dastardly doings in the state capital. If you like mysteries, and especially mysteries with lots of local color and politics, you will love the books of David Everson. I believe that he oneday will rank with Raymond Chandler and the other greats of the detective genre. He's that good.
