What a Blessing

I had the privilege of attending a workshop facilitated by the author and bought the book because of that. It's a wonderful resource for anyone working through the damage wrought by addiction. The thing I like the most is that it gives the people who have been affected by an addict a guide to make some sense of what has happened and how to begin reparing the relationship.

Joyful Healing through Improved Communications

"Rebuilding Relationships in Recovery" is A Guide to Healing Relationships Impacted by Addiction† by Catherine Patterson-Sterling. Catherine is a registered Clinical Counsellor in Vancouver who - as the back cover blurb states - is an international speaker..., she has helped couples and families across the world heal their relationships, develop personal empowerment, as well as find the happiness they deserve. †† This is an easy to read book in a conversational style, a book that will help each reader. Her choice ot terms for certain behaviours and attitudes is very useful to every WRITER trying to describe characters and motivations. Yes, some writers do have troubled people in their lives from rebellious teens to parents with dementia, even partners with life destroying addictions. †††† It is a book to taste and savour, followed by hours of consideration for each section. Just decide if any of the 10 types listed here are the way you communicate with your family members: The Warden-Investigator Trap, The Rescuer Trap , The Loner (Ignorer)Trap, The Misery Trap, The Dual Recovery Trap, The Power Imbalance Trap, The Pain Trap, The Kid Gloves Trap, The Emotional Rollercoaster Trap, and The Weakness Trap. Ever wonder why our planned common sense discussions never seem to work as we planned them? † Catherine uses clear examples from her family and partner case studies showing how both parties need to heal by changing patterns. She has good questionaires and exercises, including 101 ways to develop a playful spirit. Life does not have to be full of emotional power plays. Catherine allows readers to hope that we can change ourselves by adopting to new attitudes and behaviours. † She knows that expressing our creativity is vital to a healthy life. " In all of us there is a gift. Sometimes it is only in our darkest hours that we can finally see the light that shines from within." Catherine is a dramatic speaker who is single-handedly changing North American therapists away from the narrow focus on co-dependency as a sick life style. She is a successful self-published author, now selling workbooks and materials for 8 week courses in healing relationships. Writers can make a difference. Read and share this book.
