Civil Wae Spy Thriller

If you enjoy espionage, Civil War history, or just a good story, this book is for you. Rose O'Neal Greenhow was a Southern belle of considerable influence in the pre-war Washington, D. C. and she continued her influence through the early days of the war. She was well married, her husband had an influencial oposition during the Buchanan administration and Rose used her Southern charms to get valuable intelligence from both military and political sources, loyal to the Union to help the Confederate cause. Her neice was married to Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois. Rose's greatest accpomplishement for the South was her transfer of valuable intelligence concerning the Union's plans for the resulting battle at Bull Run in 1861. She was later convined to her home and then transfered to Capitol Prison in Washington. She was paroled in June of 1862 with the condition she not return to the Union during the war. She went to Britain as an unofficial representative of the Confederacy. On October 1, 1864 Rose was drowned when the British ship carrying her went aground off the coast of North Carolina. She was burried October 2 in Willington with full military honors. Her life was not a major influence in the War, but she supplied great propoganda. If you can get this book, read it. It is a treasure.
