In reading this book, I couldn't shake the impression that the author had originally envisioned the story as a film rather than as a novel. The visual detail and the heroine's sharp humor both lend themselves to imagining a movie adaptation. The book is surreal in the truest sense of the word. The setting and characters are written in an utterly believable manner, but the story itself frequently shifts into fantasy. These turns are initially light but turn dark as the story twists toward its grim climax. My one disappointment with the book is its episodic structure. Many of the key plot events occur in between the chapters, with the heroine recounting them rather than reliving them. This may leave some readers feeling disengaged. That being said, the clipped nature of the storyline does make for a quick read, so I presume the author made this choice to accelerate the pace of the story.
