I found this enormous volume, which I bought for five bucks at a used book store, to be quite valuable. The typesetting is rather primitive...basically they use photographs of previously published articles, complete with original page numbers. There are papers spanning the first three quarters of the twentieth century on signs, meaning and reference, verificationism and its discontents, meaning and use, the analytic-synthetic distinction, truth and modalities. I especially appreciated the chapter on modalities, in which several articles are given detailing Quine's objections and various responses; helped me to understand the weight of modal considerations lying behind the widespread acceptance of Kripke's highly counter-intuitive stories in Naming and Necessity. I think it's worth ordering a used copy for similar historical perspectives in the other areas as well. Articles by Stevenson, Pap, Quine, Garver, Linsky, Frege, Russell, Strawson, Ryle, Ayer, Marhenke, Hempel, Carnap, Feyeraben, Austin, Malcom, Findlay, Grice, Searle, Waismann, Bergmann, Tarski, Warnock, Davidson, Kripke, Follesdol, and Barcan Marcus.
