The Jane Ervin series is often used in some of the top prep schools in the country. The level of difficulty is sequential, moving from the second grade level of difficulty through 12th grade. The subjects are varied (science, geography, literature, history, etc.) and the series does a good job of helping readers to expand their body of knowledge. I have been an educator for over 30 years and a self employed master teacher for the last 23 years. I use this series in my own program servicing inner city, middle and upper class children with great, and permanent, success for years. Most are christians, and none have become devil worshipers or spawns of Satan. I have no clue what the first reviewer is talking about, as his/her review is extremely misleading, biased and ignorant--and I am a devout christian! Reading the Ervin series is an excellent antidote to the kind of stunted and unnatural, "teach to the standardized test", reading instruction served up in most public schools. This series, along with having children read the great literary works, has, and will continue to have, the greatest impact on producing intelligent, thinking and literate citizens. Perhaps this is why the Ervin material doesn't have much penetration in the government run public schools. Some folks are made into sheeple by imposition. Others, as the above reviewer, are made so by self infliction. Advisory: Always be skeptical of others here who advise you to "save your money" or "don't buy this book." The ignorant are forever insecure in their know-nothing state of self assurance, and will always attempt to enlarge their status by enlarging the society of the inept to which the belong. Always think for youself and learn to discern a cogent and objective review from an irrational, irrelevant or extremely biased one.
