Read and Understand Science, Grades 3-4 presents stories that range from low-third grade to high-fourth grade in readability.
Topics presented include:
Life Science: role of sleep, the five senses, role of play in animals, bird habitats, importance of fire in an ecosystem, animal classification, wild animal adaptation to living near humans Physical Science:...
My students found these passages interesting. With the various activities, the students developed an understanding of referencing the text, and I was able to gauge their comprehension well. However, the multiple choice questions are more knowledge-based (literal). They do not require a lot of inferencing/drawing conclusions.

I really like the way this book is set up - it's got a lot of interesting information presented in a variety of ways. It's a good introduction to many aspects of science in a clear, concise manner.

We started with grades 2-3 and I love these books! They have helped us move forward in Science like few other books I've used in the past 10 years. They are informative and fun. Read and Understand Science is filled with good activities, and the chapters are long enough to cover the concepts without becoming tedious. My favorite part is that it teaches key concepts without incorporating experiments too difficult to pull off in my kitchen!
We are using this Science book for a third grader in homeschool.

We have found this book to be interesting to the student. After reading the experiments/stories, the student answers questions about what he has read. This requires comprehension and understanding. The questions are geared to require some thinking and expression by him. When called on to do experiments, he is eager to determine if the experiment will work. Often, he insists that someone else watch how it works as he does it over. I believe he is enjoying this Science curriculum and will be finished with it in record time.

This series builds literacy in science through readings about the human body, life, earth, and physical sciences. Key vocabulary words are presented in boldface. Each reading is followed by exercises and activities that strengthen the vocabulary and concepts presented in the reading.
